The Lie Of Being Whole

So this is a poem I wrote back in the summer of 2019 right after I got back from Glasgow. A bit of backstory for you, I was in a not so great place for reasons I will save for a different post. I was going to my old youth group because it was a safe place, and I needed that in a very bad way. They were having an art night, a time to showcase art of any kind made in expression of how God was moving in you at the moment. I didn't really want to participate as a l ot of my confidence was wrecked, but Joey, the group leader, convinced me to sign up. I thought I knew exactly what I was going to read, an old poem I wrote years ago when I was preparing for my turn at Story night. Well... trying to play it safe when it comes to God working through you is a recipe for him to prove you wrong. I wanted to do something that didn't require vulnerability or transparency of where I was, so obviously, God had other plans, and I wrote this poem in under 30 minutes. Words that itched at the...

Spring blooms in Glasgow I have long had a deep and abiding love for Shakespeare, but it was not always so. My first experience with the Bard was Julius Caesar and I made the decision that I did not like reading plays, having to memorize Brutus’s monologue didn’t help my feelings towards it either. But it was later when my amazing high school English teacher had us read Macbeth that my feelings changed, albeit gradually. Side eye for Caesar Upon first reading, much like Julius Caesar, I hated the play and found it hard to understand or relate to. But she challenged me to read it again, so I did. It was upon a third read through that I found the humor and epic beauty in the Scottish play and it came alive for me. If not for falling in love with this gruesome tragedy I might have never found the great fascination with the world’s most prolific writer, nor would I have found my own spark for writing and history in the way that I did.  For that, I will always have Mrs....

The start of something new

Hey guys, it's been a while since I've posted anything and for good reason.  The summer was spent sending countless emails, working, coordinating surgery before school started, and generally trying to survive. But now I'm here in Glasgow, it still doesn't feel quite real but it's starting to. More about that in another post, first we need to catch up. Real talk, this has been probably the hardest and worst year of my life. I've had people hurt me and the people I care about in ways that I can't fix or reconcile, and I had to go through the process of forgiving them anyways even though they probably won't ever do the same for me. My health once again tried to derail my life, a new diagnosis and I learned some very hard truths about my body and the safety of having kids that I had to come to terms with. I lost friends and was backstabbed in ways that cut me deeper than they ever had before, I felt trapped and so incredibly alone and depresse...

First Post!

Obligatory picture of me on a very good day.  Hey guys! So this is my first post on this blog, hopefully, the first of many to come! The second weekend of April was a big one for me as I was inducted into Sigma Tau Delta, International English Honors Society, Delta Alpha Pi, International Disability Honors Society, as well as receiving an English department scholarship, all things that I am very excited about!  In the future, I hope to be published in one of the society journals as well as competing for an internship in New York at a publishing house that I would  absolutely love  to work at one day.  My Honors Society advisor Mrs. Walker, AKA the most amazing human being ever! My official induction certificate!  Chair of the English Department, an incredibly wonderful man and I hope to take a class with him!  It was a great couple of days, so in light of that, m y word for the day is perseverance....
